The Nile Underground and 13th Floor Entertainment were hosts to Crypta, an all-female death metal band from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Nile Underground was sold out, and honestly, this should have been at a bigger venue. Crypta’s music is deafening and in your face. Every member has such a big personality, and their talent speaks through their music. I got to the venue around 6 p.m, and the line was already forming around the venue, despite the doors not even opening until 7 p.m. This shows how true and loyal their fan base is even in the States!
It was around 10 p.m. when Crypta finally hit the stage. There were sound issues that had to be fixed, but the thing that stuck out the most was how the band interacted with fans. A person upfront was holding a fan that looked like metal blades, so Jessica (the lead guitar player) asked to see it and was posing with it for the fans. As the anticipation grew and the sound issues were finally fixed, it was time for Crypta to rip all of our heads off. Opening up the night with the blistering song “The Other Side of Anger” off of their newest album, Shades of Sorrow, Crypta set the atmosphere for the rest of the night.
There are no gimmicks with this band, and their live show is just as brutal as their music. Fernanda, the lead vocalist and bass player, has a presence that reminds me of stalwarts Tom Araya or Max Cavalera. She’s passionate and controls the entire stage both physically and vocally with her malicious singing. Watching this band live was a privilege, and from start to finish, they proved that they’re everything they put out on their record. There is an obvious pride behind their music, with a vicious touch that only they can bring. This band has accomplished a lot in a short period of time, and has worked endlessly at creating their own sound and pathway. Their fan base anticipates them to do big things in the near future, and the next time they come to town it’s a near guarantee they’ll be selling out one of the larger venues in Phoenix.
