The Devil Goes Solo in Tucson

Amigo The Devil (stage name for murder folk/folk punk/southern gothic musician Danny Kiranos) stopped off at The Rialto Theatre in Tucson, AZ this past Memorial Day weekend. Once a staple of his touring life, Amigo‘s solo shows have grown increasingly rare the last few years as he’s switched gears to tour with a full band. Holding down the stage in front of a packed house, with only a single guitar or banjo, Amigo looked comfortable and wholly at ease, remarking at one point that “Playing in Tucson is as close to a home show as I can get”. To say the crowd roared at this admission is an understatement; Amigo plays Tucson more than any city in Arizona, and people will drive in from across the state to catch him play at Rialto. Amigo even gave a shout out to his longtime friend Larry who he saw in attendance; Larry is the gentlemen who booked his first show at Rialto. The setlist pulled heavily from across multiple albums, with some songs harkening back to his prior solo tours (“The Weight” off of his Diggers ep, always hits harder solo than with a full band), and featured some quieter and less-performed-recently tracks as well (“Different Anymore” off of 2021’s Born Against was a standout from the night and hasn’t been performed live in years). There even was a guest appearance by a fan-made Amigo The Muppet, whom Amigo invited on stage to perform a song with him and David Talley (guitarist in Amigo’s full band, and who was the first opener for the evening). Amigo The Devil has only a handful of solo-shows left on this tour as he travels up the west coast, so jump on tickets (if there available) should the Devil be traveling through your town next.
