The Hu descended upon The Van Buren in Phoenix for their final show of the Warriors Souls US headlining tour on Oct. 27. Breaking into the scene in 2016, The Hu gained notoriety by 2019 when they charted for Billboard’s Hard Rock Digital Song Sales with “Wolf Totem”. That same year they had two Top 5 Mainstream Rock singles. While they’re a rock band, they also have a wide appeal to an eclectic audience that ranged from aging rockers to metal heads of all ages. Some of the near sell out crowd were a younger set in their 20s mingling shoulder to shoulder with a queer population of people all ages. An emerging core group of fans, surprisingly, has been history teachers. Teachers who are looking for fresh ways to bring relevancy to history classes have latched onto The Hu during their world history units. By discussing the history of Mongolia and The Huns and then playing rad videos like “Wolf Totem” not only are these middle aged history teacher becoming rabid fans but so are their 14 & 15 year old high school students. The combination of throat singing, poetry, and war cries coupled with instruments such as the horse head fiddle, the jaw harp, and Mongolian guitar make for an excitingly unique experience with a band who has maintained a proud connection to their Hunnian roots. Earlier this year they were awarded the UNESCO’s “Artist of Peace” designation for “Sell The World” – their animated, environmentally conscious response to the declination of the Earth. The Hu were supported by NERV and Blind Channel.
