The Sisters of Mercy at The Marquee Theater

The legendary Goth band The Sisters of Mercy announced this upcoming tour back in February and everyone’s little black heart grew a few sizes bigger. This was the first time they toured in the states in about 15 years. I mean, think about the last time they played in the states was when the Bush administration was in office. ( Insert eye roll here)

I was lucky enough to catch them twice this year. Once at Sick New World festival, and then again at the Marquee Theater in Tempe, AZ. Both times it was phenomenal . As the Marquee started to fill up, you could feel the anticipation growing for The Sisters of Mercy to take the stage. As the lights dimmed and the fog started to roll in, the band went into the newer song ‘Don’t Drive on Ice’, which came to light in 2020. It’s a faster-paced song that’s easy to dance to and it got the crowd going, which didn’t stop till the very last song of the night. The crowd ranged from old to young as newer generations are being attracted to Sisters to be an ever-lasting staple within the goth/alternative community. This was not just a show, but a giant dance party. The dark aesthetic that the band brings to their stage presence is perfect with all of the front of the stage lights turned off, they had multiple following spotlights that beamed out blue, red, and orange colors. Then, in the background, they had multiple floodlights which made the perfect silhouettes of the band members.

Andrew was like a reptilian slithering through the shadows. Occasionally glancing and staring into the audience as he growled and sang his heart out. Ben Christo is an all-around talented musician and not just an amazing guitar player. His backing vocals really brought everything together and filled in the places where Patricia is missed dearly. Dykan on bass is larger than life and I do mean that figuratively.

As the band went into ‘The Corrosion‘ everyone knew the night was about to end, or was it? Across town in downtown Phoenix every Wednesday night Obzen Vanitas, and DJ beautiful John hold Communion at Stacy’s on Melrose. This was the prefect ending at goth night to talk about concert!

I was born and raised in the Los Angeles CA and moved to Phoenix AZ in early 2020. Growing up, I was surrounded by musicians and artists who influenced my life. I've always felt a pull towards photography and finally have the opportunity to invest in my passion. I originally started out with street photography when I was a teenager. Then a good friend of mine asked me if I could take photos of his band and now I'm doing what I love, concert photography!
