Amigo The Devil is Ours … Until The Tour is Over

Amigo the Devil brought his Yours Until The Tour is Over tour through Tempe, Az this past week on Dec. 5. The Marquee Theater was packed to the brim, as people crammed in to see Amigo the Devil (real name Danny Kiranos) headline for his most recent album, Yours Until the War Is Over, which dropped earlier this year. From the size and enthusiasm of the crowd, you would never have guessed that it was a Monday night tour stop at the beginning of the holiday season. From wall to wall and up to the balcony, the crowd hung on baited breath as Amigo took to the stage solo, opening the night with a stripped down and heart-rending rendition of “Virtue and Vitriol”. The pace and pulse in the room quickened from there as the last words to “Virtue and Virtiol” faded and he launched into “I’m Going to Heaven”, playing on the rest of the band (Katacombs on the keys, Carson Kehrer behind the drums, and David Talley on guitar), building from a solo guitar to a complete band at full volume and chaotic, frenetic energy. The crowd sung along and screamed along to every word, pausing only between songs to listen to Amigo‘s spoken interludes, from stories about songs origins (I won’t spoil it here, but the story behind “Husband” is one for the record books), to tales about times touring through Arizona, to funny interlude songs the the crowd has demanded become canonical tunes (“Crying at the Orgy” and “My Body is a Dive Bar” jump to mind). Knowing how to play to his crowd, songs were pulled from across his discography to ensure that everyone’s favorite murder-folk ballad had a chance of being played live. Standout tracks from the night include “Cocaine and Abel”, “Hungover in Jonestown”, the heavily Tom-Waits-influenced “It’s All Gone”, and “Once Upon a Time at Texaco, Pt 1”. Full set list is below the photo-break.
